Tip #1: Stay physically active

Physical activity increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain, which can help keep your memory sharp. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that healthy adults get in at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity, such as taking a brisk walk, or 75 minutes a week of more vigorous aerobic exercise, like jogging.

Tip #2: Stay mentally active

Not only do you need to keep your body active, but the same thing goes for your brain. Crossword puzzles, playing bridge, learning a new language or musical instrument, or volunteering at a local school or community organization are some great ways to stay sharp and keep memory loss at bay.

Tip #3: Socialize regularly

Social interaction has been proven to ward off depression and reduce stress, both of which can contribute to memory loss. If you live alone, you must take every opportunity to get together with loved ones, friends, and others.

Tip #4: Sleep well

Getting enough sleep, 7-9 hours per night, keeps you rested and refreshed, which helps you stay sharp and consolidate your memories for easier recall down the road. Make sleep a priority.

Tip #5: Eat a healthy diet

A healthy diet isn’t only good for your heart; it’s good for your brain. Fruits, veggies, and whole grains, along with low-fat protein sources, like fish, beans, and skinless poultry are recommended by nutritionists and physicians. Lastly, limiting alcohol to one drink per day can also stave off confusion and memory loss.

Tip #6: Manage chronic conditions

Follow your doctor’s treatment recommendations for medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hearing loss, obesity, depression, and anxiety. Also, review your medications with your doctor regularly – certain drugs can affect memory.

Tip #7: Take fish oil supplements

Fish oil supplements are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to brain health. In addition, the ingredients have anti-inflammatory effects that may protect the brain against damage and aging.
