Seeds are not just for gardening!  In fact, there are many seeds that can provide great health benefits to elderly adults when eaten regularly.

  • Chia Seeds

As adults age, their bone density decreases. Those who lose a significant amount of bone are at risk for osteoporosis, the most common bone disease that can lead to painful injuries such as broken bones and fractures.  Fortunately, there are many foods that elderly adults can eat to improve bone health and one of those foods is the chia seed. Chia seeds are rich in calcium, making them a bone-healthy food.  They are also an excellent source of protein and fiber.   • Pumpkin Seeds

While pumpkin seeds are a popular snack in the fall around Halloween, there is no reason why these healthy seeds can’t be enjoyed all year long! High in fiber and protein, these low-calorie seeds are the perfect size for snacking on at home or on the go. Toss some pumpkin seeds in with a healthy trail mix or on top of a salad for some extra crunch!

  • Flaxseed

Flaxseeds may appear tiny, but they have big health benefits. They are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids which are important for reducing inflammation in the body and are great for brain health. Flaxseeds are rich in fiber, making them great for digestive health, as well. Flaxseeds can be eaten whole, but to get the maximum health benefits, they are best ground. Ground flaxseed can be added to anything from baked goods to oatmeal to smoothies.

  • Sunflower Seeds

A ballgame favorite, sunflower seeds are rich in essential nutrients. Since sunflower seeds are high in vitamin E and folate, they may help prevent heart disease if eaten regularly. Sunflower seeds are also rich in several minerals that are essential for an elderly adult’s healthy diet such as selenium, for immune system health and magnesium for a healthy mood and good overall health.
