Senior Care in Durham NC

While some seniors have looked forward to retirement all their lives, others find themselves feeling bored and useless at home. For many folks in elderly care, they may believe that their working Senior-Care-Durham-NCdays are long behind them. But, believe it or not, there are jobs available that can be done at any age with a certain amount of training and skill.

Realistically, yes, there are many jobs that would not be appropriate for an elderly person to attempt to get. Anything that requires heavy lifting, for example would simply be a poor fit. And anything that requires them to be on their feet for extended periods of time. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be out in the workforce on a part time basis if that’s what they want.

So what are some feasible part time jobs for senior citizens? Many retail and grocery stores hire seniors to serve as “greeters” for their customers. These positions may be more plentiful during the busy winter months and holiday shopping seasons, but are a great way to make a few extra dollars.

If they are comfortable with pets or babies, they may be able to do some occasional “sitting” jobs for busy parents but again, they have to be able to do so safely. If they need a walker or cane to move around, or if they cannot drive, this is probably not the best option.

If they were former teachers, they may be able to do some tutoring in their areas of expertise or perhaps even remain substitute teachers. Again, this would require mobility on their part but is a way for them to stay connected to the younger generation and continue to make a difference without having the responsibility of full-time work.

Another great option is freelance work. If they were skilled in a specific area, they may be able to write about it and share their knowledge. Or, if they were skilled bookkeepers, they may be able to serve a consulting role for companies that are understaffed and need help. The upside to doing these contract-type jobs is that they have the ultimate flexibility and can, at least potentially, work from the comfort of home. The downside, of course, is that they may not have work with any regularity.

And where can seniors look for these jobs? Again, many of the answers can be found online. Some great job websites are indeed.com, monster.com, and even craigslist.
