August is Boomers Making a Difference Month. It is the time of the year when we recognize those baby boomers who have made significant contributions to society. These elders do not have to be physically fit to help out. Many seniors living at home with physical or mental disabilities can also contribute to their communities with the help of an in-home care provider.

The first step these baby boomers need to make in order to create a difference in the world is to find something they are passionate about. Once they have an idea in mind, they can branch out and become involved with one of the following causes.

1. Local or International Disaster Relief

In the wake of hurricane Katrina, thousands of Red Cross volunteers helped rebuild the city. However, older adults can also volunteer their time to organizations such as this one by putting together meals for those in need or making a small donation. Encourage your loved one to contact an organization they have in mind to find out what they can do to help. Some popular non-profit organizations are Save the Children, Feeding America, Compassion International, and Volunteers of America.

2. Education

Seniors may no longer have children to take care of, but most have grandchildren. Helping the schools get the funds they need could positively impact the education their grandchildren receive. This could be done by donating Box Tops or Campbell’s Soup Labels to local schools. Contact the school your loved one would like to help and find out how they can help raise funds.

3. Clean Water

Dirty water is not only something that third world countries have to deal with, but there are several areas in the United States that do not have clean water. Over 3.4 million people die each year due to unclean water. There are several organizations to get involved in that work to provide cleaner water to these towns and countries, including Water.org and WaterAid.

4. Shop with a Purpose

One of the easiest ways to give back is through shopping. A wide range of companies donate a portion of each sale to a non-profit organization. Some of these companies include TOMS, St. Jude’s Gift Shop, and Ten Thousand Villages. Elders will be helping to make a difference in the world just by shopping.
