At HomeChoice Home Care Solutions, we believe that education is the key to providing exceptional care. The more our caregivers learn, grow, and develop their skills, the better they can support our clients and their families. That’s why we were proud to host a Dementia In-Service led by Carrie Walker of RN Supervisor Solutions, a Dementia Capable Cares facilitator. Over 15 of our dedicated caregivers attended this invaluable training, learning how to better recognize, communicate with, and care for clients living with dementia.
And just days after the training, we saw the real-life impact of this education—a caregiver recognized subtle signs of a stroke in a client and acted quickly, ensuring they received immediate medical attention. This moment reinforced why training matters and why we are committed to equipping our caregivers with the knowledge and skills to make a difference. To show our appreciation, caregivers who attended were treated to snacks and goodie bags as part of our 20th anniversary celebration—a small token of gratitude for their dedication to providing the best companion care and in-home care for seniors.
Why Dementia Training is Essential for Caregivers
Caring for people with dementia requires more than just experience; it requires knowledge, patience, and specialized skills. Dementia can present in many different ways, from memory loss and confusion to agitation and difficulty with communication.
At HomeChoice Home Care Solutions, we believe in equipping our caregivers with the tools
hey need to provide compassionate, high-quality in-home care for seniors. That’s why we partnered with Dementia Capable Cares and their facilitator Carrie Walker of RN Supervisor Solutions to bring an interactive, insightful Dementia In-Service to our team Over 15 caregivers attended this training, learning how to:
✔ Recognize early signs of dementia and the different types of dementia.
✔ Communicate effectively with individuals who have cognitive impairments.
✔ Use verbal and non-verbal strategies to support clients.
✔ Create safe, dementia-friendly environments at home.
✔ Identify critical health changes that require immediate attention.
Little did we know that just days after this training, one of our caregivers would use this
knowledge to save a life.
Training in Action: A Life-Saving Moment
One of the most powerful moments following the Dementia In-Service happened when a caregiver recognized the subtle warning signs of a stroke in a client. Because of what they learned in the training, they were able to identify unusual behavior and physical changes—symptoms that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. Acting quickly, the caregiver called for medical help, ensuring the client received the emergency care they needed before the situation worsened.
This real-life example proves that ongoing education is not just about improving care—it’s about
saving lives. Our caregivers are not just companions or helpers; they are trained professionals who bring
knowledge, experience, and compassion into every home they enter.
